Cinematography Breakdown: Natural Light Techniques

How to shoot cinematic imagery on location using negative fill, window bounce, and golden hour angles with minimal equipment.

Natural light is free, uncontrollable, and changes while you work. Sophia shoots four setups on location with nothing but a bounce board, a flag and a window, and treats those limits as the subject rather than an obstacle.

Negative fill gets the most attention, because subtracting light is the technique that most obviously separates location work that looks intentional from work that looks found. Window bounce follows, including how far to stand from the glass and what a net curtain does that a diffusion frame cannot.

The golden hour segment is about timing and direction rather than colour. Backlit, three-quarter and full-side positions are shot within the same twenty minutes so the comparison is fair, and there is a short section on what to do when the sun goes behind cloud halfway through a take.
